About Lake Greenwood
Lake Greenwood was built in the 1930s when Greenwood County dammed the Saluda River at Buzzards Roost with Public Works Administration financing, aiming to sell power more cheaply than Duke Power could. Duke eventually leased the plant in the 1960s and still operates it today. The lake covers about 11,400 acres with 212 miles of shoreline across Greenwood, Laurens and Newberry counties. Lake Greenwood State Park sits on the south shore, and the lake is a steady bass and crappie fishery for the upstate. A clause in the state constitution still protects the county's stake in it.
