The lake
About Lake Murray
Lake Murray was created in 1930 when the Saluda Dam closed, then the largest earthen dam in the world, flooding the Saluda River valley northwest of Columbia. The lake covers about 50,000 acres with 650 miles of shoreline and depths to 200 feet near the dam.
Lexington, Chapin, Irmo and Prosperity are the shore towns; Bomb Island, where Doolittle's raiders trained and where a million purple martins roost each summer, is the lake's landmark. The dam was backed with a rock berm in 2005 against earthquake risk.
