About Lake Wateree
Lake Wateree was created in 1919 when Duke Power dammed the Wateree River northeast of Columbia, making it one of the oldest man-made lakes in the state. It covers nearly 14,000 acres with 181 miles of shoreline across Kershaw, Fairfield and Lancaster counties, and the Wateree Hydro Station still generates power at the dam. Camden and Great Falls are the lake's towns, with Lake Wateree State Park on the western shore. The lake carries the name of the Wateree people, whose descendants later merged with the Catawba Nation, and it's known today for largemouth and striped bass.
