About Chickamauga Lake
Chickamauga Lake formed in 1940 when the Tennessee Valley Authority completed Chickamauga Dam on the Tennessee River just northeast of Chattanooga. The reservoir stretches roughly 59 miles upstream toward the Watts Bar Dam tailwater, submerging former river bottomland and creek valleys under the Tennessee River system's broader flood-control and hydropower buildout of the 1930s and 40s.
The lake borders Chattanooga, Soddy-Daisy, and Dayton, and carries barge traffic alongside recreational boaters and anglers. It has produced multiple record largemouth bass and hosts regular bass tournaments, drawing competitive anglers to its creek arms and river channel. Its shoreline winds through flooded tributary valleys, giving it a branching, uneven outline rather than a single open basin.
