About Aquilla Lake

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers impounded the North Bosque River in 1983 to form Aquilla Lake, part of a flood-control system feeding the Brazos River watershed. The dam sits a few miles northwest of the town of Aquilla, with Hillsboro and Whitney the nearest larger towns. Construction displaced sections of old farm and ranch land in Hill County, and the lake now marks the boundary between the Blackland Prairie and the rolling country to its west.

Aquilla draws a mix of crappie and catfish anglers, along with duck hunters working the shallow coves and the adjoining wildlife management area during the fall migration. Its shape is long and branching, following the original river channel and several feeder creeks, which gives it more shoreline relative to its size than a rounder lake of the same acreage. Water levels fluctuate with the Corps' flood-control operations, exposing mudflats in dry years that concentrate wading birds and shorebirds near the upper end.

Why we cut this one
Aquilla Lake is one of the lakes people ask us for by name — the kind of shoreline where the house has a name and the dock has a history. This board is cut from the same depth grid the configurator uses for all 104,419 lakes, so the shape is the real one.

Depth chart

Aquilla Lake depth chart, in wood

This is a Aquilla Lake depth chart you can hang: 6 stacked layers of birch, each one a depth contour — 6 ft, 13 ft, 19 ft, 26 ft, 33 ft and deeper, down to the deepest hole at about 39 ft. The lake covers about 4.0 square miles, and 44 shore roads are engraved around it. The shape of the bottom is the real one from published soundings, so anglers recognise their drop-offs and points.

A Aquilla Lake map for the wall — or a gift

Most of these go to a cabin wall, a lake house entry, or a home office; a lot are gifts — the family that has been on Aquilla Lake for three generations, the retirement move, the first boat. The 12-inch is the desk-and-shelf size; the 24- and 30-inch boards read across a room. Add a line under the title and star your place on the shore, and it becomes the map of your Aquilla Lake.

Questions

Aquilla Lake map — the details

How big is the map?

Four sizes: 12, 17, 24 and 30 inches on the long side, from $149. Every size is cut from the same depth data of Aquilla Lake; the bigger boards carry more shoreline roads and place names.

Is it made from real depth data?

Yes. Aquilla Lake is cut layer by layer from published bathymetric soundings — each layer of birch is a depth contour, so the shape of the bottom is the real one, not decorative.

Can I add my own place on it?

Yes. At checkout you can add a line under the title (a family name, a cabin name, a year) and star the spot on the shore that matters to you.

How long does it take?

Made to order in Waterford, Pennsylvania and shipped in 7–10 days; shipping is free in the lower 48.

Can you make a lake that isn't listed?

Any lake in the United States — we hold depth data for 104,419 of them. Search for yours; if it isn't built yet we build it when you order.
