About Braunig Lake

Braunig Lake sits in southern Bexar County, Texas, a few miles south of downtown San Antonio near the Interstate 37 corridor. City Public Service, San Antonio's municipal utility, built the reservoir in 1963 to supply cooling water for its nearby power generating station. Unlike lakes formed by damming a river valley, Braunig was engineered from the start as an industrial cooling pond, filled from the Medina River watershed and shaped with a regular, rounded outline rather than the branching arms typical of flooded creek beds.

The lake became a public recreation site soon after it opened, drawing anglers from San Antonio for catfish, largemouth bass, and stocked redfish and other saltwater species introduced through Texas Parks and Wildlife's program for testing marine fish in freshwater cooling lakes. It's also known for alligator gar, some caught well over six feet. Boaters and jet skiers use it heavily on weekends given its close-in location, and CPS Energy has long managed public access alongside its continued use for plant cooling.

Why we cut this one
Braunig Lake is one of the lakes people ask us for by name — the kind of shoreline where the house has a name and the dock has a history. This board is cut from the same depth grid the configurator uses for all 104,419 lakes, so the shape is the real one.

Depth chart

Braunig Lake depth chart, in wood

This is a Braunig Lake depth chart you can hang: 6 stacked layers of birch, each one a depth contour — 8 ft, 15 ft, 23 ft, 30 ft, 38 ft and deeper, down to the deepest hole at about 45 ft. The lake covers about 2.0 square miles. The shape of the bottom is the real one from published soundings, so anglers recognise their drop-offs and points.

A Braunig Lake map for the wall — or a gift

Most of these go to a cabin wall, a lake house entry, or a home office; a lot are gifts — the family that has been on Braunig Lake for three generations, the retirement move, the first boat. The 12-inch is the desk-and-shelf size; the 24- and 30-inch boards read across a room. Add a line under the title and star your place on the shore, and it becomes the map of your Braunig Lake.

Questions

Braunig Lake map — the details

How big is the map?

Four sizes: 12, 17, 24 and 30 inches on the long side, from $149. Every size is cut from the same depth data of Braunig Lake; the bigger boards carry more shoreline roads and place names.

Is it made from real depth data?

Yes. Braunig Lake is cut layer by layer from published bathymetric soundings — each layer of birch is a depth contour, so the shape of the bottom is the real one, not decorative.

Can I add my own place on it?

Yes. At checkout you can add a line under the title (a family name, a cabin name, a year) and star the spot on the shore that matters to you.

How long does it take?

Made to order in Waterford, Pennsylvania and shipped in 7–10 days; shipping is free in the lower 48.

Can you make a lake that isn't listed?

Any lake in the United States — we hold depth data for 104,419 of them. Search for yours; if it isn't built yet we build it when you order.
