About Coffee Mill Lake
Coffee Mill Lake sits on Coffee Mill Creek, a tributary of Bois d'Arc Creek and the Red River, inside the Caddo National Grassland northeast of Bonham, Texas. The U.S. Forest Service impounded the creek in 1939, creating a reservoir now fished by people from Bonham, Honey Grove, and the Sherman-Denison area. The name traces back to a camper who nailed his coffee mill to a tree near a spot called Diamond Hole and left it there, and the name stuck to both creek and lake. The lake is reached off FM 409, about ten miles from Bonham.
The lake covers a little over 600 acres with about five miles of shoreline, and it stays shallow across most of its basin, dropping to around 37 feet near the dam. Texas Parks and Wildlife lists it as a public fishing lake, and it draws anglers after largemouth bass and crappie rather than water-skiers or pontoon traffic. Because it sits inside a national grassland, the shoreline is mostly open woods and prairie instead of houses, and the boat ramps are the main gathering points around the water.
