About Lake Corpus Christi
The Nueces River was dammed twice on this stretch of South Texas brush country: first by the La Fruta Dam in 1929, then by the larger Wesley E. Seale Dam, completed in 1958, which raised the pool and set the reservoir's current shoreline. The result covers roughly 14,613 acres in San Patricio and Live Oak counties, feeding water to Corpus Christi some miles downstream. The lake sits in flat mesquite and prickly pear terrain typical of the Coastal Bend, with a shoreline stretching about 91 miles around low banks and coves.
Mathis, on the lake's eastern shore, grew up around the reservoir and hosts the boat ramps and marinas most fishermen use. Lake Corpus Christi State Park sits on the south shore, drawing campers and paddlers year-round in a region where summer heat pushes most recreation into early morning and evening. The lake carries a reputation among Texas anglers for largemouth bass and, after stocking programs took hold, striped bass, drawing tournament trailers from across the state. Depth is modest for its size, with a maximum around 56 feet, so the lake fishes and boats more like a wide, shallow river valley than a deep canyon reservoir.
