About Ray Roberts Lake

Ray Roberts Lake sits on the Elm Fork of the Trinity River in Denton County, Texas, formed when the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers completed the dam in 1987. The reservoir was built primarily to supply water to the growing Dallas-Fort Worth area, with flood control and recreation as secondary purposes. It's named for Ray Roberts, a longtime Denton County judge and state legislator who championed the project for decades before it was built.

The lake borders the towns of Denton, Pilot Point, Sanger, and Aubrey, with much of its shoreline held as undeveloped state park and wildlife management land rather than private lakefront. Ray Roberts Lake State Park manages units on both the east and west sides, drawing anglers after striped bass and catfish, along with hikers and equestrian trail users. Its elongated, branching shape follows the old river channel and several feeder creeks, giving it a long, narrow footprint compared to more circular reservoirs in the region.

Why we cut this one
Ray Roberts Lake is one of the lakes people ask us for by name — the kind of shoreline where the house has a name and the dock has a history. This board is cut from the same depth grid the configurator uses for all 104,419 lakes, so the shape is the real one.

Depth chart

Ray Roberts Lake depth chart, in wood

This is a Ray Roberts Lake depth chart you can hang: 6 stacked layers of birch, each one a depth contour — 15 ft, 30 ft, 46 ft, 61 ft, 76 ft and deeper, down to the deepest hole at about 91 ft. The lake covers about 27.2 square miles, and 647 shore roads are engraved around it. The shape of the bottom is the real one from published soundings, so anglers recognise their drop-offs and points.

A Ray Roberts Lake map for the wall — or a gift

Most of these go to a cabin wall, a lake house entry, or a home office; a lot are gifts — the family that has been on Ray Roberts Lake for three generations, the retirement move, the first boat. The 12-inch is the desk-and-shelf size; the 24- and 30-inch boards read across a room. Add a line under the title and star your place on the shore, and it becomes the map of your Ray Roberts Lake.

Questions

Ray Roberts Lake map — the details

How big is the map?

Four sizes: 12, 17, 24 and 30 inches on the long side, from $149. Every size is cut from the same depth data of Ray Roberts Lake; the bigger boards carry more shoreline roads and place names.

Is it made from real depth data?

Yes. Ray Roberts Lake is cut layer by layer from published bathymetric soundings — each layer of birch is a depth contour, so the shape of the bottom is the real one, not decorative.

Can I add my own place on it?

Yes. At checkout you can add a line under the title (a family name, a cabin name, a year) and star the spot on the shore that matters to you.

How long does it take?

Made to order in Waterford, Pennsylvania and shipped in 7–10 days; shipping is free in the lower 48.

Can you make a lake that isn't listed?

Any lake in the United States — we hold depth data for 104,419 of them. Search for yours; if it isn't built yet we build it when you order.
