About Sam Rayburn Reservoir
Sam Rayburn Reservoir was completed in 1965 when the Corps of Engineers dammed the Angelina River in Deep East Texas, about 114,500 acres with a maximum depth of 80 feet — the largest lake entirely within the state. It was called McGee Bend Dam until 1963, when it was renamed for the recently deceased House Speaker Sam Rayburn. Jasper and Broaddus are its towns, 70 miles north of Beaumont, and Bassmaster magazine ranked it the best bass lake in the country in 2018.
