About White Rock Lake
White Rock Lake was formed in 1910-1911 when the City of Dallas dammed White Rock Creek to create a reservoir for the city's drinking water. The lake sat several miles northeast of downtown, ringed by prairie and post oak woods along the floodplain. As Dallas kept growing, the reservoir's capacity fell short of demand, and the city eventually shifted its water supply elsewhere, freeing the lake for other uses.
By the 1930s the surrounding land had become a city park, with Civilian Conservation Corps crews building stone walls, boathouses, and the Bath House on the eastern shore. Today a paved trail follows much of the roughly seven-mile shoreline, used by runners, cyclists, and rowers from the lake's sailing and rowing clubs. The lake borders the Lakewood and East Dallas neighborhoods and draws herons, pelicans, and other waterbirds along its marshy coves.
