About Flaming Gorge Reservoir
Flaming Gorge Reservoir was formed between 1958 and 1964 when Flaming Gorge Dam closed on the Green River in northeastern Utah, backing water up more than 90 miles into Wyoming through canyons whose red sandstone walls gave the gorge its name. The lake reaches depths over 400 feet near the dam and is managed as a National Recreation Area by the Forest Service, prized for its trophy trout fishing and clear, cold water. Dutch John, Utah, and the town of Manila are the main gateways, with the Green River's famous tailwater fishery running downstream of the dam.
