About Utah Lake

Utah Lake sits in Utah Valley at the base of the Wasatch Range, fed by the Provo, American Fork, and Spanish Fork rivers and drained north by the Jordan River into the Great Salt Lake. It is a freshwater remnant of Pleistocene-era Lake Bonneville, the vast inland sea that once covered much of the Great Basin. Provo, Orem, Lehi, American Fork, Pleasant Grove, and Springville all sit along its shore, and the lake has anchored Utah Valley's farms, fisheries, and recreation since Mormon settlers arrived in the 1850s.

The lake is known for its shallowness relative to its size, which lets wind stir up sediment and drives seasonal algal blooms. It is the only place the June sucker, a federally endangered fish, occurs in the wild, and it once supported major carp fishing after the species was introduced in the 1880s. Bird Island, near the south shore, hosts one of the largest American white pelican rookeries in the western United States. Sailors, anglers, and waterfowl hunters use the lake, and Utah Lake State Park on the east shore is the main public access point.

Why we cut this one
Utah Lake is one of the lakes people ask us for by name — the kind of shoreline where the house has a name and the dock has a history. This board is cut from the same depth grid the configurator uses for all 104,419 lakes, so the shape is the real one.

Depth chart

Utah Lake depth chart, in wood

This is a Utah Lake depth chart you can hang: 6 stacked layers of birch, each one a depth contour — 2 ft, 5 ft, 7 ft, 9 ft, 12 ft and deeper, down to the deepest hole at about 14 ft. The lake covers about 141.8 square miles, and 12038 shore roads are engraved around it. The shape of the bottom is the real one from published soundings, so anglers recognise their drop-offs and points.

A Utah Lake map for the wall — or a gift

Most of these go to a cabin wall, a lake house entry, or a home office; a lot are gifts — the family that has been on Utah Lake for three generations, the retirement move, the first boat. The 12-inch is the desk-and-shelf size; the 24- and 30-inch boards read across a room. Add a line under the title and star your place on the shore, and it becomes the map of your Utah Lake.

Questions

Utah Lake map — the details

How big is the map?

Four sizes: 12, 17, 24 and 30 inches on the long side, from $149. Every size is cut from the same depth data of Utah Lake; the bigger boards carry more shoreline roads and place names.

Is it made from real depth data?

Yes. Utah Lake is cut layer by layer from published bathymetric soundings — each layer of birch is a depth contour, so the shape of the bottom is the real one, not decorative.

Can I add my own place on it?

Yes. At checkout you can add a line under the title (a family name, a cabin name, a year) and star the spot on the shore that matters to you.

How long does it take?

Made to order in Waterford, Pennsylvania and shipped in 7–10 days; shipping is free in the lower 48.

Can you make a lake that isn't listed?

Any lake in the United States — we hold depth data for 104,419 of them. Search for yours; if it isn't built yet we build it when you order.
