The lake
About Bear Lake
Bear Lake straddles the Utah–Idaho border at 5,924 feet, about 20 miles long, 8 miles wide and 208 feet deep. Limestone suspended in the water gives it a Caribbean turquoise that is startling against the sage hills, and the lake holds four fish found nowhere else in the world, including the Bonneville cisco.
Garden City on the Utah side is raspberry-shake country; Fish Haven and St. Charles are the Idaho villages. The lake has been a cutoff, an oasis and a mountain-man rendezvous site since the 1820s.
