About Castle Rock Lake
Castle Rock Lake was formed in 1951, when the Castle Rock Dam closed off the Wisconsin River after four years of construction. The water backed up over what had been farmland and river bottom, spreading across the border of Adams and Juneau counties. The dam was built primarily for hydroelectric power and flood control on the Wisconsin River, a role it still serves today alongside its upstream twin, Petenwell Lake.
The lake sits near Necedah, Mauston, New Lisbon, and Tomah, small Juneau County towns that never had a lake before the 1950s. It draws walleye and muskie anglers, along with pontoon boats and sailors who use its open, wind-exposed water. Shallow and wide rather than deep, it ranks as the fourth-largest lake in Wisconsin by surface area, and Buckhorn State Park occupies a peninsula that juts into it.
