The lake

About Lake Geneva

Geneva Lake in Walworth County, Wisconsin, is a spring-fed glacial lake about 7.5 miles long and 135 feet deep, an hour and a half northwest of Chicago. After the 1871 fire the city's industrial families — Wrigley, Schwinn, Maytag, Sears' Rosenwald — built summer estates around it, and the lake has been Chicago's Newport ever since.

The Geneva Lake Shore Path circles the entire lake across private lawns, a public right of way that dates to the Potawatomi. The Lake Geneva Cruise Line's mail boat still delivers letters to the piers, with the mail jumper leaping off and back on without the boat stopping. Fontana, Williams Bay and Lake Geneva are the three towns on the water.
