About Center Lake
Center Lake sits in Kenosha County, Wisconsin, a few miles north of the Illinois state line and roughly fifteen miles inland from Lake Michigan. Like the other small lakes scattered through this corner of the state, it occupies a depression left behind by the glaciers that covered the region until roughly 12,000 years ago. The lake covers about 138 acres and has a shoreline of roughly three miles, modest next to neighboring Camp Lake and the Twin Lakes chain a few miles to the west.
The lake sits within reach of Trevor and the village of Twin Lakes, communities that grew up around Chicago-area families coming north for summer cottages. Center Lake itself stayed smaller and quieter than its larger neighbors, ringed by a mix of year-round homes and seasonal cabins rather than resort development. Its modeled maximum depth of about 23 feet keeps the water shallow enough to warm through the summer, favoring panfish and bass over the cold-water species found in the region's deeper lakes.
