About Lake Koshkonong
Lake Koshkonong is a broad, shallow widening of the Rock River in southern Wisconsin, spread across Dane, Jefferson and Rock counties, covering more than 10,500 acres but averaging only about 6 feet deep. It was largely marshland until the Indianford Dam, completed in 1932, raised and stabilized the water level into the lake seen today. Its warm, murky water is prime habitat for panfish, catfish and walleye, and Native American effigy mounds along its shores mark centuries of earlier settlement around the lake basin.
