About Reservoir Pond

Reservoir Pond sits a few miles outside Rhinelander, in Wisconsin's Northwoods lake district, a region left pocked with lakes and ponds by the retreat of glaciers roughly 10,000 years ago. Rhinelander itself grew up as a lumber and rail town in the 1880s, tied to the white pine trade that once dominated northern Wisconsin. Cabins and small resorts have ringed lakes like this one for generations, drawing anglers after walleye and muskie rather than day-trip crowds.

At 596 acres and roughly 78 feet at its deepest point, Reservoir Pond is larger and deeper than its name suggests, more lake than pond by any standard measure. Its shoreline runs about 11 miles, enough to hold a scatter of bays and points rather than one open basin. Bodies of water in this part of Wisconsin were reshaped repeatedly by glacial ice, which explains the irregular edges and the mix of shallow flats and deeper holes found across a single lake.

Why we cut this one
Reservoir Pond is one of the lakes people ask us for by name — the kind of shoreline where the house has a name and the dock has a history. This board is cut from the same depth grid the configurator uses for all 104,419 lakes, so the shape is the real one.

Depth chart

Reservoir Pond depth chart, in wood

This is a Reservoir Pond depth chart you can hang: 6 stacked layers of birch, each one a depth contour — 13 ft, 26 ft, 39 ft, 52 ft, 65 ft and deeper, down to the deepest hole at about 78 ft. The lake covers about 1.0 square miles. The shape of the bottom is the real one from published soundings, so anglers recognise their drop-offs and points.

A Reservoir Pond map for the wall — or a gift

Most of these go to a cabin wall, a lake house entry, or a home office; a lot are gifts — the family that has been on Reservoir Pond for three generations, the retirement move, the first boat. The 12-inch is the desk-and-shelf size; the 24- and 30-inch boards read across a room. Add a line under the title and star your place on the shore, and it becomes the map of your Reservoir Pond.

Questions

Reservoir Pond map — the details

How big is the map?

Four sizes: 12, 17, 24 and 30 inches on the long side, from $149. Every size is cut from the same depth data of Reservoir Pond; the bigger boards carry more shoreline roads and place names.

Is it made from real depth data?

Yes. Reservoir Pond is cut layer by layer from published bathymetric soundings — each layer of birch is a depth contour, so the shape of the bottom is the real one, not decorative.

Can I add my own place on it?

Yes. At checkout you can add a line under the title (a family name, a cabin name, a year) and star the spot on the shore that matters to you.

How long does it take?

Made to order in Waterford, Pennsylvania and shipped in 7–10 days; shipping is free in the lower 48.

Can you make a lake that isn't listed?

Any lake in the United States — we hold depth data for 104,419 of them. Search for yours; if it isn't built yet we build it when you order.
