About Upper Nemahbin Lake
Upper Nemahbin Lake sits in Waukesha County, Wisconsin, a short drive west of Milwaukee, connected to Lower Nemahbin Lake by a narrow channel that lets boats pass between the two. The Nemahbin lakes formed in a landscape shaped by glacial retreat, part of the kettle and moraine terrain common across southeastern Wisconsin. The name comes from a Potawatomi or Ojibwe word associated with sturgeon, reflecting the fish once found in this chain of lakes before settlement changed the watershed.
The lake sits within the town of Delafield, and the surrounding shoreline mixes year-round homes with seasonal cottages, a pattern typical of the Lake Country region that grew up around Milwaukee's rail and road access in the 20th century. Anglers fish it for panfish, bass, and northern pike, and the connection to Lower Nemahbin means boat traffic moves between the two basins rather than staying contained. Its modest depth and shape keep it more of a warm, weedy fishery than a deep clearwater lake.
