About Boysen Reservoir
Boysen Reservoir sits on the Wind River in central Wyoming, on land leased from the Eastern Shoshone and Northern Arapaho tribes of the Wind River Indian Reservation. Asmus Boysen built the first dam here in 1908 to generate electricity for a planned rail line through the canyon, but the reservoir it created flooded the very tracks it was meant to serve, and the railroad bought out and breached the dam. The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation completed the current dam in 1951 for irrigation storage and flood control, and Boysen State Park opened around it in 1956.
The reservoir stretches north from the town of Shoshoni to the mouth of Wind River Canyon, where the highway and a rail line thread between reservoir and red rock walls toward Thermopolis. Anglers come for walleye, rainbow trout, and ling; sailors and powerboaters use the open, wind-exposed water south of the canyon. Boysen is broad and shallow for a reservoir of its size, with more than 18,000 acres of surface area but a maximum depth under 100 feet, so it warms fast in summer and drops fast in drought years.
