About Shoshone Lake

Shoshone Lake sits inside Yellowstone National Park in northwestern Wyoming, fed by the Lewis River channel that connects it to Lewis Lake to the north. At roughly 7,050 acres, it covers more surface area than any other lake in the Lower 48 states that has no road reaching its shore. Visitors reach it by hiking trails from the Lewis Lake trailhead or the DeLacy Creek trailhead, or by canoe and kayak paddling up the connecting channel from Lewis Lake. The lake's basin lies within the caldera left by Yellowstone's ancient volcanic eruptions.

The lake's western shore holds the Shoshone Geyser Basin, one of the largest backcountry geyser fields in the park, with geysers, hot springs, and fumaroles clustered along the inlet stream. Backcountry campsites ring the shoreline, reserved through the National Park Service permit system, and used by canoeists, kayakers, and hikers on multi-day trips. Boat motors are prohibited, so travel across the water is by paddle only. Anglers fish for native cutthroat trout and, in some sections, brown and lake trout, working water that reaches depths cited at around 139 feet.

Why we cut this one
Shoshone Lake is one of the lakes people ask us for by name — the kind of shoreline where the house has a name and the dock has a history. This board is cut from the same depth grid the configurator uses for all 104,419 lakes, so the shape is the real one.

Depth chart

Shoshone Lake depth chart, in wood

This is a Shoshone Lake depth chart you can hang: 6 stacked layers of birch, each one a depth contour — 23 ft, 46 ft, 70 ft, 93 ft, 116 ft and deeper, down to the deepest hole at about 139 ft. The lake covers about 11.2 square miles. The shape of the bottom is the real one from published soundings, so anglers recognise their drop-offs and points.

A Shoshone Lake map for the wall — or a gift

Most of these go to a cabin wall, a lake house entry, or a home office; a lot are gifts — the family that has been on Shoshone Lake for three generations, the retirement move, the first boat. The 12-inch is the desk-and-shelf size; the 24- and 30-inch boards read across a room. Add a line under the title and star your place on the shore, and it becomes the map of your Shoshone Lake.

Questions

Shoshone Lake map — the details

How big is the map?

Four sizes: 12, 17, 24 and 30 inches on the long side, from $149. Every size is cut from the same depth data of Shoshone Lake; the bigger boards carry more shoreline roads and place names.

Is it made from real depth data?

Yes. Shoshone Lake is cut layer by layer from published bathymetric soundings — each layer of birch is a depth contour, so the shape of the bottom is the real one, not decorative.

Can I add my own place on it?

Yes. At checkout you can add a line under the title (a family name, a cabin name, a year) and star the spot on the shore that matters to you.

How long does it take?

Made to order in Waterford, Pennsylvania and shipped in 7–10 days; shipping is free in the lower 48.

Can you make a lake that isn't listed?

Any lake in the United States — we hold depth data for 104,419 of them. Search for yours; if it isn't built yet we build it when you order.
