The lake
About Lake Allatoona
Lake Allatoona was completed in 1950 when the Army Corps of Engineers dammed the Etowah River northwest of Atlanta, one of the first big reservoirs built in the region after the war. It covers about 12,000 acres with depths to 145 feet near the dam, ringed by Cartersville, Acworth, Emerson and Canton. During the severe drought of 1986 the water dropped so far that grass grew on the exposed lakebed, and kids were seen mowing it to play baseball on the new vacant lots.
