About Lake Lanier

Lake Sidney Lanier was created by Buford Dam on the Chattahoochee in 1956 and is named for the Georgia poet. It has about 692 miles of shoreline and depths to 156 feet by the dam, and it is the most visited U.S. Army Corps of Engineers lake in the country. The 1996 Olympic rowing and canoe events were held on it at Gainesville.

Lake Lanier Islands, the marinas at Cumming and Gainesville and the towns of Buford, Flowery Branch and Dawsonville ring the water. It is also metro Atlanta's water supply, which is why its level is watched so closely.

On the board
  • 24 shore towns named, with a star on each
  • 13,230 roads engraved around the shore, 2 of them labeled
  • 6 depth layers, each step engraved with its depth in feet
  • Compass rose, title block with coordinates, max depth and area; keyhole hanger on the back
Why we cut this one
Lake Lanier is one of the lakes people ask us for by name — the kind of shoreline where the house has a name and the dock has a history. This board is cut from the same depth grid the configurator uses for all 104,419 lakes, so the shape is the real one.
