About Reregulation Reservoir
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers built the reregulation dam on the Coosawattee River in the 1970s, just downstream of Carters Dam, to catch and even out the surges released by Carters' pumped-storage hydroelectric plant. Carters Dam, finished in 1977, generates power in bursts, sending sudden pulses of water downstream. Without a buffer, those pulses would swing river levels sharply through the towns below. The reregulation reservoir absorbs that fluctuation, holding roughly 2,449 acres of water near Dalton in northwest Georgia before releasing it at a steadier pace toward the Coosawattee's confluence with the Conasauga.
Local anglers fish the reservoir for bass and catfish, and boat traffic stays lighter than at Carters Lake just upstream. There are no large marinas here; access mostly comes from primitive ramps and pull-offs used by people from the Dalton area. Because the lake exists to manage hydroelectric releases, its water level can shift over the course of a day as Carters Dam cycles on and off. The shoreline follows the old path of the Coosawattee River, giving the reservoir a narrow, winding shape rather than a broad open basin.
