The lake
About West Point Lake
West Point Lake was formed in the mid-1970s when the Army Corps of Engineers closed West Point Dam on the Chattahoochee River, straddling the Georgia–Alabama line south of Atlanta. It covers close to 26,000 acres with depths to 85 feet near the dam. LaGrange and West Point, Georgia, sit on the Georgia side, with Lanett and Valley, Alabama, across the water. It was the first impoundment south of Atlanta on the river, which meant it bore the brunt of the city's sewage overflow until a major cleanup in the 1990s.
