About Lake St. Clair

Lake St. Clair connects Lake Huron and Lake Erie through the St. Clair and Detroit rivers, a shallow 430-square-mile heart of water that is only about 27 feet deep at its dredged shipping channel and averages around 11. The freighters cross it on a straight line; everyone else fishes it, since it may be the best smallmouth and muskie water in North America.

The Grosse Pointes, St. Clair Shores and Harrison Township's boat-lined canals are the Michigan shore; Walpole Island and the St. Clair delta — the largest freshwater delta in the world — are at the north end. Metro Beach, Belle Isle and the Detroit skyline are downstream.
