About Kittatinny Lake
Kittatinny Lake sits in the ridge country of northern New Jersey, its name drawn from a Lenape word for "great mountain" that also names the long ridge running through the region. The lake is small by regional standards, a few hundred acres at most, ringed by wooded shoreline rather than open development. It has long served as a gathering point for youth camps and local families rather than a commercial resort destination.
Towns near the lake are small and rural, more oriented around farmland and state forest than industry. The water draws canoeists, anglers, and campers rather than large motorboats, and much of the surrounding land has stayed forested, bordering public conservation tracts typical of the Kittatinny ridge corridor. Its modest size and depth keep it quieter than the larger reservoirs and natural lakes elsewhere in the state.
