About Lake Barnegat
Lake Barnegat sits inland from the Atlantic City coastline, part of the shallow, sandy-bottomed lake country common along southern New Jersey's bay shore. At 67 acres it is a small lake by regional standards, closer in scale to a large pond than to the open bay waters nearby. Its shoreline runs about two miles, ringed mostly by residential lots rather than public parkland, so the lake functions as a quiet inland extension of the coastal towns around it rather than a destination lake in its own right. Traffic on the water is mostly rowboats, canoes, and small outboards.
Depth is modest for its footprint: a modeled maximum of about 26 feet, reached well offshore of banks that slope gradually from the yards backing onto the water. That profile favors bass and panfish over the deeper cold-water species typical of glacial lakes farther north. Residents fish for largemouth bass, crappie, and sunfish, and the lake sees more paddling and dock time than sailing, since its size limits open-water runs. Its closest kin are the small residential lakes scattered through Atlantic and Ocean counties, quiet water a short drive from the boardwalk crowds of Atlantic City.
