About Lake Shawnee
Lake Shawnee sits a short distance from Paterson, New Jersey, a city built on the falls of the Passaic River and once known nationally for silk manufacturing. The lake itself covers about 59 acres, small compared to the reservoirs and glacial lakes that dot the rest of northern New Jersey. Its shoreline measures close to two miles, a length that points to an irregular outline of coves and points rather than a simple round basin. Reaching a modeled maximum depth of about 24 feet, it is shallow enough that light reaches much of the lake bed across most of its surface.
Small lakes like this are common across the high ground west of Paterson, most built or expanded to serve the towns and mill communities that grew along the Passaic River. They tend to draw local rather than long-distance traffic: anglers working the shallows, rowboats and small outboards, families swimming near the docks.
