About Manasquan Reservoir
The reservoir was built between 1988 and 1990 by the New Jersey Water Supply Authority, damming the south branch of the Manasquan River in Howell Township, Monmouth County. It supplies drinking water to towns along the Jersey Shore, moving water inland from the Manasquan River during wet months for storage and later release. The lake covers roughly 682 acres, with about six miles of shoreline shaped by the low ridgelines of the original river valley.
No gasoline motors are permitted on the water, so boat traffic is mostly canoes, kayaks, and rented pontoons. A perimeter trail circles the shoreline through pine and hardwood woods, popular with runners and birdwatchers, and an environmental center on the north side runs nature programs for area schools. The state stocks the lake with trout in spring and largemouth bass and channel catfish through the season, drawing anglers from Howell, Freehold, and nearby Ocean County towns on weekend mornings.
