About Pines Lake
Pines Lake sits in Wayne Township, Passaic County, New Jersey, a few miles northwest of Paterson. The lake was built by damming a local stream in the 1920s, part of a wave of private lake communities developed across northern New Jersey during that decade. Developers laid out lots around the shoreline and sold them for summer cottages, many of which were later converted to year-round homes. The lake and the neighborhood around it remain governed by a private homeowners association rather than by the township directly.
Pines Lake covers about 119 acres with roughly two miles of shoreline and a modeled maximum depth near 32 feet. Access is restricted to residents and their guests, who use a member beach, docks, and a boat launch spread around the perimeter. Motors are limited on the water, so canoes, kayaks, and small sailboats make up most of the traffic. Bass and panfish draw residents to the docks at dawn. The lake anchors a residential neighborhood of streets laid out around its shoreline, rather than a lake added later to an existing town.
