About Round Valley Reservoir
Round Valley Reservoir was built in the early 1960s when the state of New Jersey dammed three sides of a natural valley in Hunterdon County to create a water-supply reservoir. Construction ran from 1960 to 1965, submerging farmland and a section of ridge to form what became the state's largest reservoir. It supplies drinking water and helps maintain flow in the Raritan River during dry periods.
The reservoir sits near the towns of Lebanon and Clinton, and its steep, rocky sides make it deep close to shore, drawing scuba divers who train in its cold, clear water alongside anglers after lake trout. Boats are limited to electric motors, keeping the pace slow. A swimming beach and campground on the south shore give it a public-access side that a working water-supply reservoir doesn't always have.
