About Shepherd Lake
Shepherd Lake sits inside Ringwood State Park in the New Jersey Highlands, close to the New York border and a short drive from Paterson. The park surrounds the lake with hardwood forest and connects to a network of hiking trails that climb toward the Ramapo Mountains. The lake's shoreline runs close to a mile around roughly 69 acres of water, small enough to see across but large enough to hold a swimming beach, a boat launch, and separate fishing water without the uses crowding each other.
Because it sits inside state park land, Shepherd Lake draws day-trippers from northern New Jersey and the New York suburbs rather than a fixed community of lake-house owners. Boating is limited to non-gasoline craft, which keeps the water quiet for canoes, kayaks, and rowboats. The state stocks it with trout and warmwater species, and anglers work the shoreline and the deeper water near the center of the lake, where the bottom drops to around 52 feet.
