About Upper Greenwood Lake
Upper Greenwood Lake sits in West Milford Township, Passaic County, New Jersey, in the highlands near the New York border. It is a separate, smaller body of water from the larger Greenwood Lake a few miles to the northeast, which straddles the state line. Houses ring nearly all of its roughly seven miles of shoreline, and the lake is managed by a private property owners' association rather than open to the general public. Paterson lies about thirty miles to the southeast.
The lake covers about 376 acres and reaches a modeled maximum depth near 42 feet, shallow enough that most of the basin warms through the summer. Residents use it for fishing, kayaking, and small motorboats, with bass and panfish drawing anglers from the surrounding hills. Its shoreline is irregular, cut by coves and points that keep the water mostly out of sight from any single vantage. Weekend traffic is local rather than tourist, made up of homeowners and their families rather than visitors passing through.
