About White Meadow Lake
White Meadow Lake is an impounded lake, held in place by a dam rather than carved by glacial retreat like most lakes in the region. It sits inland from Paterson, New Jersey, ringed by homes built close enough to the shore that the lake reads as the center of the neighborhood rather than a destination outside it. At roughly 128 acres with about three miles of shoreline, it's small enough to see across but large enough to support a private lake association that manages the water and the dam that holds it.
The lake functions as the organizing feature of a residential community rather than a public recreation area — access runs through membership in the association, and most boats on the water belong to people who live within walking distance of the shore. Depth tops out around 30 feet, shallow enough that the lake warms quickly in summer and supports the swimming, kayaking, and small-boat fishing that year-round and seasonal residents built their routines around. Winters bring the water down to a stillness that matches the lake's role: a shared backyard amenity, not a tourist stop.
