About Broken Bow Reservoir
The Army Corps of Engineers completed Broken Bow Dam in 1968, impounding the Mountain Fork River in the Ouachita foothills of McCurtain County, Oklahoma. The project was built for flood control, hydropower, and water supply, backing water up through a narrow, branching valley near the town of Broken Bow. The reservoir covers roughly 13,447 acres with about 117 miles of shoreline, a ratio that reflects its many coves and fingers rather than open, uniform water.
Beavers Bend State Park sits on its upper end, and the community of Hochatown grew up around cabins and rental traffic tied to the park and the lake. Anglers fish it for striped bass and largemouth bass, while the cold tailwater released below the dam into the Mountain Fork River supports a stocked trout fishery, unusual for this part of the state. The lake draws visitors from Texarkana and the broader Arkansas-Oklahoma border region for boating and weekend cabin stays.
