About Cockleburr Lake
Cockleburr Lake sits just outside Southaven, Mississippi, in DeSoto County, a stretch of low bluffs and bottomland a few miles south of the Tennessee line and Memphis. The area was farmland and scattered crossroads well into the mid-1900s before subdivisions and highway growth reshaped DeSoto County into one of the fastest-growing counties in the state. The lake takes its name from cocklebur, a burred weed common to the region's fields and fencerows, a plant most people here have pulled off socks and dog fur at least once.
At about 259 acres with roughly three miles of shoreline, Cockleburr Lake is small enough to cross by kayak in an afternoon and shallow enough, at a modeled 46 feet at its deepest, that sunlight reaches bottom over much of its area. Lakes this size in DeSoto County typically draw a mix of local anglers working for bass and crappie, families in canoes, and residents whose backyards run down to the water. Its shape and depth were never dramatic enough to attract state park status, which is part of why it has stayed a quiet, local fixture rather than a tourist destination.
