About Lake Champlain

Lake Champlain is the sixth-largest freshwater lake in the United States by area, running north from Whitehall, New York, to the Quebec border with Vermont on the east shore and the Adirondack foothills on the west. It is 400 feet deep off Split Rock and holds islands large enough to have their own towns — Grand Isle, North Hero, Isle La Motte.

Samuel de Champlain saw it in 1609, Benedict Arnold fought a fleet action on it at Valcour Island in 1776, and Thomas Macdonough's victory at Plattsburgh Bay in 1814 ended the British campaign from Canada. Burlington's waterfront, Shelburne's farms and the ferries to Essex and Port Kent are the modern lake.

On the board

  • Compass rose, title block with coordinates, max depth and area; keyhole hanger on the back
Why we cut this one
Lake Champlain is one of the lakes people ask us for by name — the kind of shoreline where the house has a name and the dock has a history. This board is cut from the same depth grid the configurator uses for all 104,419 lakes, so the shape is the real one.
