About Rimrock Lake

Tieton Dam went up in 1925 on the Tieton River, built by the Bureau of Reclamation as part of the Yakima Project to store irrigation water for the valley below. The resulting reservoir, Rimrock Lake, sits in the Cascade foothills of Yakima County, Washington, along the route to White Pass. The dam is an earthfill structure, and the lake follows the old river canyon, giving it a long, narrow shape instead of a round basin.

Naches, the nearest town, sits along US Highway 12 west of Yakima, and the lake draws campers and anglers from both sides of the Cascades heading toward White Pass. Because it exists to store irrigation water rather than for recreation, the reservoir is drawn down through summer and into fall, and by October the water can drop low enough to expose old stumps and the original river channel along the shoreline. Kokanee salmon and rainbow trout are the main draws for anglers who fish it from small boats and the bank near the Forest Service campgrounds that ring the lake.

Why we cut this one
Rimrock Lake is one of the lakes people ask us for by name — the kind of shoreline where the house has a name and the dock has a history. This board is cut from the same depth grid the configurator uses for all 104,419 lakes, so the shape is the real one.

Depth chart

Rimrock Lake depth chart, in wood

This is a Rimrock Lake depth chart you can hang: 6 stacked layers of birch, each one a depth contour — 16 ft, 33 ft, 49 ft, 66 ft, 82 ft and deeper, down to the deepest hole at about 98 ft. The lake covers about 3.3 square miles, and 18 shore roads are engraved around it. The shape of the bottom is the real one from published soundings, so anglers recognise their drop-offs and points.

A Rimrock Lake map for the wall — or a gift

Most of these go to a cabin wall, a lake house entry, or a home office; a lot are gifts — the family that has been on Rimrock Lake for three generations, the retirement move, the first boat. The 12-inch is the desk-and-shelf size; the 24- and 30-inch boards read across a room. Add a line under the title and star your place on the shore, and it becomes the map of your Rimrock Lake.

Questions

Rimrock Lake map — the details

How big is the map?

Four sizes: 12, 17, 24 and 30 inches on the long side, from $149. Every size is cut from the same depth data of Rimrock Lake; the bigger boards carry more shoreline roads and place names.

Is it made from real depth data?

Yes. Rimrock Lake is cut layer by layer from published bathymetric soundings — each layer of birch is a depth contour, so the shape of the bottom is the real one, not decorative.

Can I add my own place on it?

Yes. At checkout you can add a line under the title (a family name, a cabin name, a year) and star the spot on the shore that matters to you.

How long does it take?

Made to order in Waterford, Pennsylvania and shipped in 7–10 days; shipping is free in the lower 48.

Can you make a lake that isn't listed?

Any lake in the United States — we hold depth data for 104,419 of them. Search for yours; if it isn't built yet we build it when you order.
