About Spencer Lake
Spencer Lake sits in Mason County, Washington, a few miles northeast of Shelton, in the low, forested terrain west of Puget Sound carved by the Vashon glaciation roughly 15,000 years ago. Like most small lakes in this part of the county, it took its modern shoreline from glacial retreat rather than a dam, filling a shallow basin left behind as ice sheets withdrew from the southern Sound.
The lake is mostly ringed by private homes and cabins rather than a downtown, with residents and weekenders drawn from Shelton, Olympia, and the wider South Sound. It has long drawn warmwater anglers after largemouth bass and panfish, along with kokanee and trout stocked in nearby Mason County waters, and its modest size keeps traffic to small boats, canoes, and kayaks rather than large motorized craft.
