About Swofford Pond
Swofford Pond was built in 1966-67 as a holding and rearing pond for juvenile steelhead, part of the Cowlitz Fish Hatchery complex tied to Tacoma Power's Mossyrock Dam project on the Cowlitz River. The pond grew when the surrounding area flooded during dam construction. The steelhead program did not work as planned, and the state later converted the pond to warmwater fish management instead, in a stretch of Lewis County southeast of Mossyrock, closer to the White Pass corridor than to any city.
Today the pond holds naturally reproducing bluegill, crappie, largemouth bass, and brown bullhead, and Tacoma Power stocks it with catchable rainbow trout on top of that. Internal combustion motors are banned outright, so the water sees electric trolling motors and car-top boats rather than anything with a wake. Access is an unimproved launch with decent shoreline for bank fishing. It draws a steady, local crowd of anglers rather than pass-through boat traffic, more rural Lewis County than lake-resort.
