About Wynoochee Lake

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers built Wynoochee Dam in 1972, damming the Wynoochee River in the foothills of the Olympic Mountains in Grays Harbor County, Washington. The project was designed for flood control and to supplement water supply and fish flows for the Chehalis River basin downstream. The reservoir sits inside Olympic National Forest, roughly 30 miles northeast of Aberdeen and Montesano, the nearest towns of any size. Access is by a single forest road that dead-ends at the lake, so traffic in is mostly campers, anglers, and Forest Service crews rather than through travelers.

The lake covers about 749 acres with roughly 7 miles of shoreline, a size that keeps it well below the larger reservoirs on the Olympic Peninsula's west side. Wake restrictions limit boat speed near the shore, which has made it a destination more for kokanee and trout anglers, kayakers, and campers at the Coho Campground than for water-skiers. Its basin narrows and deepens toward the old river channel, giving it a long, dammed-valley shape rather than the round bowl typical of natural lakes. Grays Harbor County manages recreation access alongside the Forest Service.

Why we cut this one
Wynoochee Lake is one of the lakes people ask us for by name — the kind of shoreline where the house has a name and the dock has a history. This board is cut from the same depth grid the configurator uses for all 104,419 lakes, so the shape is the real one.

Depth chart

Wynoochee Lake depth chart, in wood

This is a Wynoochee Lake depth chart you can hang: 6 stacked layers of birch, each one a depth contour — 11 ft, 22 ft, 33 ft, 44 ft, 55 ft and deeper, down to the deepest hole at about 66 ft. The lake covers about 1.2 square miles. The shape of the bottom is the real one from published soundings, so anglers recognise their drop-offs and points.

A Wynoochee Lake map for the wall — or a gift

Most of these go to a cabin wall, a lake house entry, or a home office; a lot are gifts — the family that has been on Wynoochee Lake for three generations, the retirement move, the first boat. The 12-inch is the desk-and-shelf size; the 24- and 30-inch boards read across a room. Add a line under the title and star your place on the shore, and it becomes the map of your Wynoochee Lake.

Questions

Wynoochee Lake map — the details

How big is the map?

Four sizes: 12, 17, 24 and 30 inches on the long side, from $149. Every size is cut from the same depth data of Wynoochee Lake; the bigger boards carry more shoreline roads and place names.

Is it made from real depth data?

Yes. Wynoochee Lake is cut layer by layer from published bathymetric soundings — each layer of birch is a depth contour, so the shape of the bottom is the real one, not decorative.

Can I add my own place on it?

Yes. At checkout you can add a line under the title (a family name, a cabin name, a year) and star the spot on the shore that matters to you.

How long does it take?

Made to order in Waterford, Pennsylvania and shipped in 7–10 days; shipping is free in the lower 48.

Can you make a lake that isn't listed?

Any lake in the United States — we hold depth data for 104,419 of them. Search for yours; if it isn't built yet we build it when you order.
